About Our Dogs Cancer & Bio Detection Dogs Determining Accuracy During testing, the decisions our dogs make about every sample they sniff is recorded onto a database. This data is then used to determine the dogs’ accuracy which is measured using sensitivity and specificity. Sensitivity is the dogs ability to correctly identify a disease positive sample. Simply put, it measures how good the dog is at detecting the odour it has been trained to find. If a dog achieves sensitivity of 93.8%, it means that the dog correctly identified target odours 93.8% of the time. Specificity is the dogs ability to correctly identify a disease negative sample. This measures how good the dog is at ignoring samples which do not contain the odour the dog has been trained to detect. If a dog achieves specificity of 94.9%, it means that the dog correctly ignored negative or control odours 94.9% of the time.
