Health & Welfare Medical Detection Dogs is a member of Assistance Dogs UK (ADUK) and Assistance Dogs International (ADI) and follow their standards of Health & Welfare for Dogs. Whether breeding a litter ourselves or sourcing puppies externally, responsible breeding practices are of great importance to us – we conduct extensive research into blood lines and ensure comprehensive health testing has been completed on parents. Our commitment to the highest welfare standards for our dogs is a charity wide responsibility and continues throughout puppyhood, training, working life and retirement. Medical Detection Dogs is a registered Veterinary Practice Premises (VPP) with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) and our Health & Welfare team are Registered Animal Medicines Advisors (RAMA), helping us to keep abreast of the latest care advice. We are part of a working group for the purpose of sharing best practice between UK Assistance Dog charities and we regularly review health protocols. At Medical Detection Dogs, we work closely with a local veterinary practice providing veterinary care and medical treatment. We have a dedicated vet assigned to us and together we oversee preventative treatments like vaccinations and regular flea & worming medication. Our dedicated Health & Welfare team ensure all of the dogs’ needs are met, this includes providing care to dogs when onsite. Our Headquarters have exceptional and bespoke facilities like our veterinary room, grooming area and enclosed exercise paddocks. They also support volunteers to look after the dogs when at home - we believe dogs thrive in a loving home environment, giving us the opportunity to support a no-kennel policy. The wonderful volunteers looking after our dogs have 24/7 support from us. Providing care for our dogs also includes supplying enrichments such as toys and treats. If you are considering a gift for our dogs, they would love any of the items from our Amazon Wishlist. The welfare of our dogs is of paramount importance to us; whilst they are training and working, but also when they are retired or withdrawn. Dogs that are ending their career with Medical Detection Dogs make wonderful pets, and we take care to ensure their individual needs are met when finding them a new home.
