Ernie

Hi, I’m Herbert. I’m an inquisitive and playful puppy and with your help, I can become a life-saving Medical Detection Dog.

Breed: Spaniel x Lhaso Apso

Gender: Male

Colour: Black and White

Likes: Meeting people and discovering my new home

Dislikes: Not being able to play with my socialising family all day long

Herbert is in very good hands as he is living with one of our senior instructors, Lydia, who, as well as working for Medical Detection Dogs has trained, socialised and fostered dogs for us previously. Lydia is already doing a great job at teaching Herbert the life skills he will need to become a Medical Detection Dog. Lydia will soon start taking Herbert out and about to new environments and says that he is already learning very quickly about how to sit and come to her side when he is called. Herbert is already displaying some of the characteristics that make for a good dog and showing us how intelligent he is.

Trainer Becky says: “Herbert is settling in to his new life really well. He loves people and is keen to discover everything about his new home and garden. His eagerness to explore and his early use of his sense of smell gives us hope that he’ll become a wonderful member of the Medical Detection Dogs family. Herbert is very loving dog and has a fun, outgoing personality and will soon start coming to the centre to experience new sights and fellow puppies-in-training. Everything is currently new and exciting, but he is taking it all in his stride and enjoying the praise and rewards he gets for all his good work.”

We’re delighted that Herbert has settled in so well and he is in for a fascinating and exciting few months ahead. With Lydia and Becky at his side, there is no doubt that he’ll go on to become a superstar.

The difference a sponsor puppy can make

Elizabeth’s journey with PoTS has been a rocky one to say the least. She only appeared to have black out episodes whilst doing judo and used to get some kind of warning beforehand. As time passed she began to feel more unwell in day to day life; was always extremely tired and dizzy, ached constantly, and had frequent heart palpitations and chest pain. Her black outs also started happening more and more frequently without warning, and whilst doing daily activities, such as school, shopping or watching TV. Elizabeth also had a fair few bad injures and concussions from dropping suddenly. Henry and Elizabeth were partnered up and ready to give it a whirl in the real world. Elizabeth was blown away how much more relaxed, calm and safe her episodes were. Henry would alert, she’d sit down, and everything would run its course smoothly; no injuries or drama. With time his alerting became really strong and he hardly missed any episodes! Henry has allowed Elizabeth to take her independence back and start living! He’s her wet nosed knight in shining armour and she couldn’t be more grateful to him.
